Updates & the Support Plan
How iDentiCal Sync receives updates, what changes when the optional Support & Updates Plan is active or lapsed, the manual upgrade path, and why we made the licence perpetual rather than tying updates to a subscription.

How updates are designed
iDentiCal Sync is licensed perpetually. The version you installed is yours to run forever — there are no "plugin expired" lockouts, no remote kill switches, and no enforced upgrade prompts. The optional Support & Updates Plan is exactly what it says: a yearly subscription that brings you new versions and priority support. The Software itself never disables itself, regardless of plan status.
With the Support Plan active
Updates arrive in two ways while your Plan is active:
- Notification in the tray app. When a new version is available, the Check for updates menu item shows a small badge. Clicking it opens a download page with release notes; you choose when to apply.
- Direct download. A signed installer is downloaded over HTTPS from
updates.identicalsync.com. The tray app verifies the signature before launching the installer.
The installer takes 30–60 seconds and is safe to run while sync is active — it stops the Service, replaces the binaries, restarts the Service, and resumes. No re-authorisation is required. Existing OAuth tokens, clinic config, and sync targets survive the upgrade.

When the Plan lapses
If you don't renew the Plan, the following changes — and only these — take effect at the next renewal date:
- The Software continues to work indefinitely. Sync runs as before. Your sync targets, calendars, and configuration are untouched.
- The "Check for updates" path stops offering new versions. The tray menu item is still present, but the upstream check no longer surfaces new builds.
- Support response times revert to community/best-effort. You can still email support@identicalsync.com, but the 2-business-day priority response in the terms only applies while the Plan is active.
No data is deleted. No features are disabled. There is no nagging banner. The Software is yours under section 3 of the Terms of Service and continues to operate as it did on the day the Plan lapsed.
Manual updates
Even with a lapsed Plan, you can manually update by getting a signed installer for the version you want. There are two paths:
- Renew the Plan, run Check for updates, install the latest. You can then let the Plan lapse again if you want — you'll have the latest version at the moment of renewal.
- Email sales@identicalsync.com for a single-version uplift quote — useful if you want to jump to a specific newer version without committing to twelve months.
Types of update
We classify updates so you know what a given release contains before you install:
| Type | What's in it | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Changes to keep working with OpenDental, Google APIs, or Windows updates that affect us. | Low. Skipping these eventually breaks sync. |
| Security | Dependency upgrades for CVE fixes; encryption changes; auth-flow hardening. | Low. We recommend applying these even on a lapsed Plan. |
| Feature | New configuration options, new UI surfaces, new title format placeholders, etc. | Low–medium depending on scope. Release notes spell out the surface area. |
| Major | Reserved for changes that affect on-disk format, scope changes that require re-authorisation, or behaviour changes that need a heads-up. | Medium. Read the release notes and ideally apply outside clinic hours. |
Pinning a version
The Service does not auto-upgrade. There's no silent background updater. Every version transition is a deliberate action you take. This means "pinning" is the default state: whatever you install is what you run until you choose to install something newer.
If you have a particular reason to stay on a specific version — for instance, the practice has internal IT change-control rules that require approval per software version — you can simply not run the update. The tray app will show that an update is available; ignoring it is fully supported.
Renewing after a lapse
You can renew the Support & Updates Plan at any time at the then-current price. Renewing after a lapse does not back-charge for the missed period — you pay one year forward from the renewal date.
Example
Bought licence: 2026-05-15
Bought 1-year Plan: 2026-05-15
Plan expires: 2027-05-15
Plan lapsed for 8 months
Renewed Plan: 2028-01-15
New expiry: 2029-01-15
Back-charge: none
If your group has multiple locations, renewing them on the same cycle simplifies invoicing and qualifies for the group discount described on multi-clinic deployments.
